Handshake AI Review (2026): Fellowship Pay, Application Process, and Who It Fits

Everyone should apply to Handshake AI. There is a small lift of signing up, entering your education and work experience, skills, etc. But once you do this, it is pretty hands off. You can apply for any projects that you see so long as you are a good fit, and applying is just filling out a quick form, no interview (typically).
Then, if any new projects are a good fit for you, you will get an email notifying you to apply. You don’t need to constantly check the website.
What the work is
Fellows write prompts, evaluate model outputs, validate responses, and judge domain-specific reasoning for major AI labs.
Pay rates
Most Fellowship roles publish $75–$125/hr, with the typical rate around $90–$100/hr. Some roles are lower paid, and they just started allowing users outside of North America to apply, so that may impact pay rates. They also will frequently pay you to do the onboarding assessment, even if you fail. I made $500 doing an onboarding assessment with 4 hours of work.
The application
No AI interview: the application leans on your resume and academic profile through Handshake’s platform. The typical successful applicant is a graduate student, postdoc, or recently-credentialed researcher. You should apply to what exists when you sign up, but then you will just have to play the waiting game for any new roles.
The downsides
Some of the project leads are a bit inexperienced. They will often onboard a lot of people onto projects, pay them to do the onboarding assessment, and then filter down heavily. Don’t assume that just because you got into a project you are guaranteed to be in it going forward.
Project Slack channels get big and have no moderation; users will ask a lot of questions and it can be easy to miss important messages.
Verdict: who should apply
Honestly, everyone. HAI has some domain-targeted roles and some general roles; it pays well and is very easy to apply to things. This is a great one to just apply and let it sit in the background until you get emails about new opportunities.
